Mentors Make a Difference

June 27, 2016
Studies show that students who have a mentor in their life are 50% more likely to attend college than those without a mentor. Mentors for Berks Youth (M4BY) was established over 25 years ago to create mentor relationships between members of our community and students in the Reading and surrounding school districts.
Students demonstrating strong academic potential and a willingness to learn and grow, are nominated to our program by teachers in the school district. When the student agrees to join the program, the student completes a profile identifying their hobbies, interests and academic goals. This information is used to match the student with a community member who shares similar interests and can assist the student in reaching their goals.

The pairs are encouraged to be in contact weekly and meet in person at least once per month. M4BY sponsors monthly events for the mentor and student to interact and learn. Our monthly events include dining out with informational speakers, sporting events, community service projects, college tours and bus trips. Our most recent bus trip was to the National Aquarium and Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, MD. The students loved learning about history, seeing a reenactment and touching the aquatic life at the aquarium.
The new students nominated for our program have dreams of being lawyers, doctors, veterinarians, police officers, astronomers and more! They are a great group of kids who, with your help, will achieve all of their goals.
