Reading, PA:  Opportunity House is proud to announce the 30th anniversary as a service provider in the Greater Reading area.  The agency was founded by a small group in Reading, PA known at the time as the Reading Urban Ministries.  Throughout the three decades, hundreds of thousands of individuals and families came to Opportunity House for shelter, food, education, compassionate support and direction in gaining self-sufficiency.The ultimate goal of the shelter and housing programs continues to be for each to comfortably secure a home of their own in the community.  Today, the agency and programs have continuously and appropriately grown to help those who need us the most, and by meeting the needs in Berks County.

“This will be a time to thank the entire community for helping us remain 30 years strong in BerksCounty”, said Modesto Fiume, President of Opportunity House (for the past twenty years).

Special Speaker for the night:  (keynote)… Sister Mary Scullion, Executive Director and President, Project HOME, has been involved in service work and advocacy for homeless and mentally ill persons since 1978.

Other Highlights:  The exhilarating musical synergy of The Uptown Band will entertain guests at the dinner with background and ‘star’ theme music.  This dynamic collaboration is well know for their explosive, melodic, and grooving mix of jazz, pop, rock, funk and R&B in their home region of the Northeast and beyond since 2006.

Opportunity House is a multi-service organization improving the quality of life for children, families and adults who face various obstacles to independent living. With a primary goal to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency, our major services include the Second Street Learning Center (with state-of-the-art technology and curriculum for children age six months through school-age); emergency, transitional and permanent housing for individuals and families who are homeless, and our SSVF program (shelter services for veterans and their families who are homeless). The Children’s Alliance Center (CAC) provides services to children who have been sexually abused. The newest program is the Resale & Reuse Servicesprogram, which is a ‘waste-based’ business to provide jobs in Berks County and sustainability to the organization now and in the future.
