Meet Local Candidate, Barry Jozwiak

October 14, 2014

Barry Jozwiak grew up in West Reading.   After graduation from high school, he entered the U.S. Navy and received an Honorable Discharge upon completion of his military service. He then enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police and served as a Pennsylvania State Trooper for 25 years.

In 1995, he was elected  Sheriff of Berks County and served three terms from 1996 to 2008.   During his tenure in office, he garnered national recognition for transforming the Sheriff’s Office into a well respected Law Enforcement Agency.     As Sheriff, he also took on more responsibility, increased efficiency, and saved taxpayers money.      Barry Jozwiak created the Central Processing System in Berks County, which allowed police officers to make an arrest, drop the arrested person off at the Sheriff’s Office for processing, and return to duty immediately to respond to the needs of the public.    Central Processing was a major change in the Criminal Justice System and is used today by every law enforcement agency in Berks County, including State and Federal agencies.

Barry attended The Pennsylvania State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Corrections and also an Associate Degree in Community Services.  He also attended the National Sheriff’s Association Institute Executive Development Program and attended the Louisiana State University, Academy of Counter-Terrorism Education.

Barry currently resides in Bern Township and is a small business owner, operating a small orchard and Christmas tree farm.     He also currently serves as a Bern Township Supervisor.

Barry served on the Executive Board of the State Police Camp Cadet program for 25 years and was president for 10 years.   He also served on the Executive Board of the Hawk Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America.

He is a past President of the Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Association, and has served on the advisory board of Crime Alert Berks County, the Berks County Criminal Justice Policy Group, Berks County Emergency Management team, and the Domestic Abuse Council of Berks County.

He is a member of several conservation groups such as the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, The Ruffed Grouse Society, and the National Wild Turkey Federation, TheNorthkill Rod and Gun Club, Leesport Gun Club, StrausstownGun Club, and Shartlesville Fish and Game Association.

He is married for over 30 years and has 1 daughter, 2 grandchildren a cat and 2 Labrador Retrievers.   He is a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Barry Jozwiak is running for State Representative in Berks County’s new 5th District.    Having a background in Law Enforcement, Local, County, and State Government and Small Business, Barry will bring a unique perspective to state government.

His motivation for running and top priority while in office, will be to help eliminate the school property tax.    He will be a tireless advocate for investing in our children’s education, rein in wasteful government spending, improving Pennsylvania’s business climate, and bringing new jobs to our region.

Barry has a proven track record as a results oriented leader.    He will work hard everyday to earn the public’s trust and help everyone keep more of their hard earned dollars.
