Six Tips for a Safe Halloween for Kids and Adults

Halloween is not just for kids.  Yes, trick-or-treating to collect candy is more fun for kids, but adults like to participate in the fun with decorating and having parties.  Here are some tips to keep in mind, so that Halloween is safe and fun for everyone.

1.  If you are going to a Halloween party, consider putting your costume on after you arrive.  Long costumes can interfere with driving, as can shoes that you are not used to wearing.

2.  It's fun to go trick-or-treating without your parents as you get older, but remember to stay in a group, and you should still only visit the houses of people you know.

3.  If you are driving around on Halloween, please be careful of the many trick-or-treaters who will be out that night.  Drive slowly through neighborhoods, and make sure you come to complete stops at stop signs.

4.  Consider painting your child's face instead of using a mask (but test the paint on your child's skin ahead of time to make sure there are no allergies).  Masks are made one-size-fits-all, which can make it difficult for some children to see through their mask.

5.  Make sure your walkway is illuminated and nothing is on the path to your front door.  Trim back bushes, if needed, to make sure kids have a clear path up to your door.

6.  Consider offering some non-candy items for trick-or-treaters with allergies.  Items like temporary tattoos, activity books, slinkies, etc. would make great treats!
