Tips for Using Spices

By Jennifer Schorr, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Reading March 9, 2012

I don't know about you, but when I got married, I registered for a spice rack. Why? Because it seemed like something I was supposed to register for. Yet, when it came time to cook, I had no idea what most of the spices were used for. Actually, I still don't know what you use some of them for, like Marjoram, but I am learning how to use some of the others, and I thought that maybe there were some other people out there, like me, who could use a little help when it came to the spice rack.

Oregano - Honestly, I knew it sat on tables in Italian restaurants, and people like to sprinkle it on their pizza, but did you know that it's used in a lot of Greek dishes as well?  It's great to add to stuffing mixes and it gives more flavor to vegetables - add it to some Italian dressing and pour it over your asparagus next time.

Parsley - Ok, so this garnishes plates to make everything look nicer, but you can add this to melted butter and then refrigerate it so it hardens again.  Use it to spread over some fresh baked rolls.

Basil - This one sounds a little strange, but it really is good.  If you add some basil and parmesan cheese to melted butter, you can put it on top of popcorn (the kind you pop yourself, not the "Movie Theater Butter" microwave kind).

Mint - Adding a fresh sprig of mint to iced tea or lemonade in the summer makes it even more refreshing.

Rosemary - Mix some cheddar cheese with some rosemary and add it to ground beef when you are making meatloaf, or mix some with some melted butter to pour over mashed potatoes.
