Making a cake or pastry that is sinfully scrumptious AND beautiful does not have to be a chore.  This elegant looking version of cinnamon rolls is a wonderful addition to any Christmas breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 loaves of frozen bread dough (thawed and at room temperature)
  • ½ cup of light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 stick salted butter (melted and cooled)
  • 2 T. cinnamon
  • flour
  • walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • icing (optional) (I use confectioners sugar and milk)

Directions:

  1. Lightly grease a 12-inch pizza pan.
  2. Divide dough into 3 equal parts.
  3. Mix Sugars and Cinnamon in a bowl and set aside.
  4. On a lightly floured surface roll out 1 section of dough into a 12-inch circle.  Place in greased pan and cover with ½ melted butter. Sprinkle with ½ of cinnamon/sugar mixture.
  5. Roll out the second section of dough and place it on top of first.  Spread with remaining butter then sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture.
  6. Roll out the third section of dough and place it on top.
  7. Place a small glass in the middle of the circle and using a serrated knife make 16 equal pie-shaped wedges.
  8. Gently twist each wedge 4 times to create a spiral.  Remove the glass.
  9. Cover dough loosely with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until almost doubled in size.
  10. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  11. Uncover dough,  sprinkle with nuts and bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Remove from oven and cool.  When completely cool drizzle with icing if desired!
