Macaroni Crafts ~ Craft Stick Bookmark

A simple & fun craft to encourage reading

By Anna Hall, Hickory NC Publisher September 10, 2013
Encourage your kids to read by having them make a bookmark for themselves. They'll have fun creating it and using the bookmark once finished. This craft uses common craft supplies you probably already have in house and the best part is that kids can customize it to their liking.
Materials:
  • Wood craft sticks (3 for each bookmark)
  • Paint in colors of child's choice
  • Paintbrush
  • Stickers or other embellishments (optional)
  • Thin ribbon
  • 3-5 colored beads
  • School glue or hot glue gun
What to do:
Paint craft sticks and allow to dry. Kids may choose to paint all three the same color (as in our example) or each stick a different color.

Glue the sticks together side by side. Decorate with stickers or embellishments to child's liking.

Glue the sticks together first, then, once dry and holding together, use paints to decorate (if not using stickers).

String beads onto the ribbon and tie off one end so beads don't slide off.  Glue the other end to the back of the bookmark.  We covered the spot with another sticker.

Ready, set, read!

Tips & Hints:
  • I found school glue worked better than a hot glue gun to glue the sticks together.
  • I often use clothespins to hold items in place while the glue dries.
