GloFish: Teaching Pet Responsibility from Set-Up through Care

I love the lessons that can be taught through the responsibility of having a pet. In my family, 3 out of 5 of us are allergic to cats and/or dogs. But when I was given the opportunity to review GloFish tanks, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to introduce how to care for a pet from the get-go.

GloFish sent me a 5-gallon tank, gravel, water conditioner, tank decorations and fish food. I purchased 2 GloFish to house in the tank. The tank was easy to set up, with clear instructions included in the box. I did have to go out and purchase a heater for my tank as well, because with Pennsylvania winters, it would be hard to maintain their 72-80 degree water temperature preference...that was lesson number 1 that my family learned.

Through setting up the tank and introducing the fish to their new home, we learned about how fish need to adjust from the water temperature in the bag they are in from the pet store to the temperature of water in the tank, so we let the bag float in the water for a few hours to regulate the temperature so the fish were not shocked.

We also discussed how my kids do not need to feed the fish a lot. Once or twice a day is sufficient, but only a small amount at a time. We compared the amount of food we put on our plates for a meal to the size of our body, and then judged about how small of an amount that would be for the fish.

My favorite part about these fish, though, is how they glow! GloFish are available in six stunning colors: Starfire Red®, Electric Green®, Sunburst Orange®, Cosmic Blue®, Galactic Purple® and Moonrise Pink®. Through the use of the "magic light" (really, it's just blue LED lights), the fish absorb the light and re-emit it, giving off a glowing sensation. Watching the fish swim around is quite mesmerizing and relaxing, too!

If you are on the hunt for a unique gift for your son or daughter this holiday season, a GloFish may just be what you are looking for. Most major pet stores and many independent stores sell GloFish. You can find a store near you with the store locator on their website. Also, you can order GloFish online from their online store at shop.glofish.com and they will be delivered directly to your home.
