Review: "DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free"

By Jennifer Schorr, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Reading May 1, 2017

When I was asked to review a new series coming to Netflix, "DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free", I was skeptical. Gone are the days of "quality" cartoons and kid shows in my opinion. What happened to all the great shows I grew up watching? What have they been replaced with? I ask myself these questions nearly every time my 7-year old son wants to pick something to watch on TV...but that is not the case anymore! We found a quality and entertaining show to watch that holds the interest of both of us throughout the entire program.

"DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free follows three friends, who together experience coming of age and the power of friendship. Lucky, a gutsy 12-year-old girl, befriends a wild mustang she names Spirit. With her two best friends, Abigail and Pru, and their horses by her side, they explore a world filled with endless rides and never ending fun. Together they’ll push their own limits and discover what it truly means to be free.

A coming of age series, inspired by DreamWorks’ Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Spirit Riding Free brings to life three smart, empowered and relatable main characters, Lucky, Pru and Abigail. From major events like flash floods and blizzards, trainer robbers and banditos, treasure hunts and secret sleepovers, executive producer Aury Wallington (“Sex in the City,” “Veronica Mars” and “Heroes”) has created a world filled strong characters who defy stereotypes and mirror positive images of young viewers on screen."

Of course, it helps that my son and I are both horse lovers. But I think that even if that isn't your favorite animal, you and your children will still appreciate the story lines and the friendships that are featured in this new show. This series offers a story line that allows the viewers to feel all kinds of emotions for the main character, Lucky, who is moving away from the life she has always known to a new area where she is the new girl. It doesn't take her long to make some friends and together they go on some daring adventures. Check it out for yourself on May 5 when it premiers on Netflix.
