Last year after their successful run of the Berks County premiere of Xanadu, the Berks Catholic Production Team began the search for their 2018 musical. They wanted to introduce a slightly different musical genre to our actors. Annie (2016) was a typical older type musical, while Xanadu (2017) was a modern musical. Thoroughly Modern Millie was suggested. Not only was this show on Mr. Ricco’s bucket list, but it provided Mrs. Veet the opportunity to do what she loves…TAP! The beautiful orphans from Annie had a taste of tapping, so they knew the cast was ready. This summer they started grooming the students with tap lessons and the rest is history.
Thoroughly Modern Millie is based on the 1967 film of the same name — which itself was based on the British musical Chrysanthemum (which opened in London in 1956). The show opened on Broadway on April 18, 2002. That production subsequently won six 2002 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Though the show is set in the Roaring 20’s, it is a relatively new show on the stage. The comedy and situations are definitely from an era when life was much simpler. When they speak of “Moderns”, it can only make you laugh!

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a big dance show about a small-town girl who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love, but the man she set her sights on, her boss, Mr. Graydon of the Sincere Trust Insurance Company, views her as "one of the boys". Millie is also captivated by Jimmy, a paper clip salesman, but she feels that his happy-go-lucky attitude instead of being driven to succeed, makes him a poor candidate for marriage. In this zany spoof of the Roaring Twenties, Millie experiences the fun flapper lifestyle, and fights off a white slaver, who happens to be her landlady.
So sit back, relax and enjoy, Thoroughly Modern Millie!!!
