Playground Review: Colony Park, Wyomissing

By Kristen Owles, Macaroni Kid Reviewer May 9, 2018

Colony Park
2519 Cromwell Drive, Wyomissing

This is one of our favorite playgrounds to frequent! There is a large center play area, geared towards school age children ages 5-12 as per signage, with six different slides, monkey bars, upper bridge and viewing area, rock wall, and more. There are also five traditional swings for older children and a blue car seat-esque strap-in swing for especially little ones. In the pre-school (2-5 year old) section, there are smaller versions of slides and monkey bars, four toddler swings, and a cute little percussion area with different sized plastic drums.

This park is always well maintained and clean. If there is trash or debris it is infrequent. It is usually uncrowded and quiet. The major pluses would be the variety of equipment for different age groups, large spaces and multiple ball fields, great visibility from all angles to keep an eye on your children, and good maintenance. The downfalls would be the walk back to your car (and port-o-potty!) and the lack of accessibility for the differently-abled.

Are there any bathrooms?
Yes, they are attached to the pavilion and always locked, to my knowledge. But there is a singular port-o-potty next to the parking lot, just a bit of a walk away. It's relatively clean.

How much parking is there?
There is a small lot (26 spaces and 1 handicapped space) off of Cromwell Drive, with a macadam pathway leading to the play area. It's a little more of a walk than most other playgrounds but not ridiculous. (Insider Tip: I've never seen more than five or six cars parked there on the weekdays.)

Is it handicapped accessible?
No. I have pretty high standards for accessibility, and I think this playground would be difficult for someone in a wheelchair or otherwise differently-abled to navigate. There is a decent walk to get to the actual play area, slight levels/curbs between grass and mulch, and the mulch would be tough to move around in. In addition, there are no wheelchair accessible swings or access to the jungle gym.

Are dogs allowed?
I saw no signs indicating otherwise.

Park Amenities:
Trashcans - YES
Recycling - NO
