The Exeter Community Library began June of 1999 out of the lower level of the Dunn Community Center, formerly the Dunn barn. The current building, located at 4569 Prestwick Drive, Reading, PA 19606, celebrated it’s Grand Opening on November 4th, 2006. Their collection of materials continues to grow each year, but at the end of last year, they had a whopping 58,588 in books, DVDs, magazines, periodicals and other materials. And perfect for this time of year, they have an exceptionally large collection of paranormal titles thanks to a generous donation from local author Charles J. Adams, III.
In addition to adding new materials, the library also adds new programming when they recognize there is a need for something new. For example, last year they introduced a new program called 'Art Adventures' which engaged children 4 and older outdoors in various art activities. (The program was held inside in inclement weather.) The participants loved this program and they brought it back again this past summer. The library offers a wide variety of programming for all ages! Their Children's Programs include Family Movie Nights, their extremely popular Storytimes for infants through kindergarten, and they are widely known for their awesome Summer Reading Program events and programming. Kids are able to earn prizes, see plays, participate in programs such as magic shows and events featuring live animal ambassadors. All free of charge!
Of course, in order to have this great variety of resources and programming, fundraising is needed to help with the costs. The 'Friends of the Exeter Community Library' go through a considerable amount of effort to host numerous fundraisers throughout the year. There are two annual Book and Bake Sales, an annual Bazaar, a Holiday Wreath and Cookie Sale, and much more! Dates along with further details can be found on our website. In addition we collaborate with local businesses to hold events benefiting the library such as fundraisers at Panera and Painting with a Twist.
They are so happy to be a popular weekly destination for families year round and hope to continue to be a reliable resource for all ages whether you are stopping in for their extensive Summer Reading Program for children and adults, their recreational programs such as movie nights, book clubs and local author visits, or to use their Ancestory.com software to research your heritage. Need a quiet place to study? The Exeter Community Library also offers study rooms and WiFi. They want to be a learning center everyone in the community can turn to for practical assistance, fun and entertainment as well as educational programming.
